Office of the Chief Medical Examiner

Forensic Pathology Facility | Completed in 2017 | 45,218 SF | CM/GC-at-Risk | Architect of Record | Public Art

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, USA  KMD served as Architect of Record for the relocation of The Office of the Chief Examiner for the City and County of San Francisco. It is a creative and adaptive re-use of an existing single-story concrete tilt up building; creating a two-story contemporary, highly sustainable facility, designed to current building standards to satisfy the current and future needs of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The new building design transforms the existing building envelope into an appropriately modern concept, maintains an approachable human scale and provides a greatly improved level of architectural detail and site landscaping concepts that reflect a modern, efficient and safe workplace for the users and relates well to the surrounding neighborhood. Certified LEED Gold, the facility is also designed to meet the California Energy Code 2013, one of the most stringent energy codes in the United States.

The facility is comprised of a large forensic medical complex (including a Bio-Safety Level 3, Isolation Autopsy Suite), field investigation facilities, as well as administrative and support services. Programmatic and first responder functions include a medical complex, forensics laboratory, administration, field investigations, building support and public functions. (In collaboration with McClaren, Wilson and Lawrie, Inc., as forensic science facility design specialists, Crime Lab Design as Bridging Architect and Clark Construction as General Contractor).

A NEW INDIA BASIN LANDMARK
Alma, the sculpture for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, celebrates India Basin’s rich boat-building past while providing a lasting symbol for its promising and ambitious future. The sculpture abstractly represents full sails as they assume form by the force of the wind: uplifting, dynamic, dramatic, and poised as a bird in flight. Alma is now a landmark that defines the upper end of India Basin while serving as a beacon for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. At night, LED lights project a soothing, soft amber color illuminating the sculpture. Richard Deutsch Studio 2017
