James R. Herman Cruise Terminal at Pier 27

91,000 SF | Two-acre public plaza | $80m

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, USA  This Joint Venture project of KMD Architects-Pfau Long Architects, with maritime facilities consultant Bermello & Ajamil of Miami, Florida served as the headquarters and principal viewpoint for the America’s Cup Races on San Francisco Bay in 2013. The James R. Herman International Cruise Ship Terminal at Pier 27 now serves as the new point-of-entry to San Francisco, as well as a special event facility on non-cruise days. The platform landscaping serves as a two-acre Northeast Wharf public plaza pedestrian access to the water’s edge as required by the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission’s Special Area Plan for the San Francisco Waterfront. Creative sustainable practices on this project included eliminating the use of harmful PVCs and harvesting rainwater for reuse in giant cisterns.
