With a Master’s degree in Architecture and a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art—both from University of Texas, Austin—John applies his diversity of disciplines to kmd projects.

For the past 20 years, this kmd Project Architect has played an integral role in some of our most complicated projects, from remodeling two entire floors at Children’s Medical Center, Dallas to the new San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

In previous adventures, this native of coastal New Hampshire made his living as a lobsterman, bus driver, housepainter, carpenter, cabinetmaker, boatbuilder, and six years as a salty seaman with the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine. He also “survived” 20 years of ultimate frisbee, mostly pick-up, but culminating in a next-to-last finish at a regional masters tournament. Good times indeed!

Leap Arts Sandcastle building day at Ocean Beach—John laying down the plans with volunteers for the day.

For three years, John led kmd’s team for the annual Leap Arts in Education Sandcastle Classic. The event is a fundraiser for arts education in Bay Area elementary schools. John and his fellow team volunteers work with local fifth graders to design an ambitious sand sculpture and build it in competition with other teams at Ocean Beach, San Francisco.

His enthusiasm in participating with the Leap Sandcastle Classic is similar to the dedication he brings to each project team he is a member of. You can always count on John to bring his “above and beyond” attitude to all endeavors.
